Making the Most of A Small lot in Williams Bay WI



Raised patio, boulder wall, and plantings





This homeowner had a newly remodeled summer home on a small lot with virtually no backyard and a sloping side yard. She wanted a usable patio with some privacy. The plantings needed updating and we added more low maintenance shrubs and perennials.

We first build a sturdy boulder wall, and then built the patio on top, out of Techobloc Borealis pavers and steps.

The natural wood look of the Techobloc Borealis pavers and steps fit in well with the woodsy setting.



Shade tolerant Groundcover





We planted compact arborvitae on top of the wall for year round privacy, and filled in the edges with shade tolerant sedum mats for a low maintenance planting.

We also paved the front stoop with Borealis pavers and relaid the existing flagstone walkway.

Ruins Wall, Permeable Paver Patio and Water Feature





We transformed this home’s large underused patio space into a beautiful private haven. The old patio was sterile and unwelcoming, and lower than the surrounding area. To solve these problems we installed Unilock Beacon Hill Pavers with permeable sand and an underground drain system to avoid water issues. Patio and walkways are edged in Courtstone.


Water feature





Rosetta Belvidere Seatwalls surround the patio and frame the bubbling birdbath water feature. The water feature is a lovely soothing spot that provides water for birds and other wildlife.



Ruins Wall





The Ruins Wall creates privacy and adds mystery and interest for a smaller east facing seating patio area.


A year or two later, the Boston Ivy is climbing the ruins wall, and the homeowner decorates the wall with colorful annual pots.

This project was done over the course of 2 years. The pool patio was installed in 2020, The patio off the back of the home, shown in this video was installed in 2021. A full demo of the existing patio was required

This was the first stage of a 2-year-long project for this repeat customer. The pool patio shown in this video was installed in 2020. Year 2 brought a patio off the back of the home as well as plantings. These additional features were installed in 2021 shown in the video linked below.

This install was packed with features! To start with, a hilltop patio with a built-in firepit, overlooking a beautiful green field at the back of the property. Down the hill from there is a massive 3-tier terraced garden, complete with a staircase for ease of access to the lower field area. The stairs also enable the homeowners to tend to their garden beds effortlessly. - Working on a steep hill job can be a challenge. Fortunately, we have all the equipment and skills required to tackle them!

We upgraded this backyard with a lower-level flagstone patio, Rosetta steps that lead up the main level patio that utilized Unilock Beacon Hill pavers. Finishing it off with added plants, mulch, and Kichler landscape lighting for safety and ambiance.

Sunrise Gardens replaced failing timber retaining walls with Rosetta Outcropping walls, creating an attractive but safe and functional lake access.

Strict Walworth County lakeshore regulations, difficult site access and a steep hill set the stage for this challenging but fun project.

We also built a beautiful patio closer to the house out of Unilock Yorkstone with Rosetta Belvidere seatwalls to tie it all together.


Outcropping, Steps, and Walls





Rosetta Outcropping was chosen for its massive size and engineering requirements, which allowed us to build the wall without geogrid. This helped to preserve the root systems of the existing oaks. The Rosetta products also look like natural stone, even up close.

"Since the back yard was sloping at a good pitch, we jointly decided to build a retaining wall along nearly the full yard width, using 20"-24" boulders. This also allowed the back yard to have a 20'-25' deep flat yard area for entertaining and comfort, and where a 15' diameter, stone patio was also built, which included a wood burning fire pit in the middle."
