Happy First Day of Spring!

The Spring Equinox, or Vernal Equinox is one of the two points in the year when the Sun crosses the equator, resulting in nearly equal lengths of day and night worldwide. In the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the beginning of spring, usually occurring around March 20th or 21st. For us, this event symbolizes the transition from the dark, cold days of winter to the warmer, brighter days of spring, bringing with it the promise of renewal and growth in the natural world.

The first day of Spring signals the start of the season for planting and tending to gardens and landscaping projects. It's a great time to start planning and preparing for the upcoming growing season.

We can begin to prepare the soil for planting, start seeds indoors, and start to plan outdoor plantings. We can plan design projects and select plants and materials to plant in May.

Landscape projects that can be done in March in Wisconsin depend on the weather conditions.

🛠️ If the temperatures are mild, hardscape projects can begin. If the ground is still frozen, we can focus on cleanups, pruning, and preparation.

🏡 March is a great time to start preparing the garden space by removing debris, adding fresh soil and compost, and laying down mulch. This will help ensure a successful planting season when temperatures become warm enough.

🌳 March is also a good time to prune and trim trees, shrubs, and other perennials. This will help them look their best and encourage healthy growth during the spring and summer (but don't prune Spring Flowering Shrubs).

💧 Another project that can be done in March is to install an irrigation system. This will help conserve water and make sure that the plants get enough water during the dry summer months.

🏞️ March is a great time to start planning for the upcoming season. Think about what plants you want to add to your garden, how you want to arrange them, and what other features you would like to add. Planning now will help ensure successful projects later.
